Lusíadas Saúde Advisory Board

Lusíadas Saúde seeks to continually improve the performance of the health system, as well as to improve the health and well-being of the general population.

With this goal in mind, Lusíadas Saúde works not only with health professionals, but also with all stakeholders and partners who play a relevant role in widening access for all citizens to quality health care services at accessible prices.

Lusíadas Saúde understands how very important the Advisory Board — as a multidisciplinary body and forum for consulting — is. It is made up of a group of individuals widely recognized for their merit, who are able to contribute to improve performance of the objectives identified.

Leopoldo Cunha Matos (President)

Gastroenterologist and Fellow of the European Board of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Previous Director of Gastroenterology at Hospital Egas Moniz (CHLO) and Clinical Director of Hospital Lusíadas Lisboa (2013-2019). Presided over the College of Gastroenterology and the Portuguese Gastroenterology Society. Presided over the Portuguese Medical Association Advisory Board for the Exercise of Private Medicine.

António Bagão Félix

Economist, Professor. Minister and secretary of state for various administrations in the areas of Finance, Social Security, and Labor. Worked previously as state advisor, vice-governor of Banco de Portugal, administrator for insurances, president of the Justice and Peace Commission, and member of various ONG and IPSS social organizations. Honored with the Great Cross of Merit from the Order of Infante D. Henrique. He has published several papers and books, among them: Do Lado de Cá, ao Deus-Dará (On This Side, God Willing, 2002), O Cato e a Rosa (The Cactus and the Rose, 2008), O Conto do Vigário (Vigário’s Tale, on text by Fernando Pessoa, 2011), Trinta Árvores em Discurso Direto (30 Trees in Direct Discourse, 2013), Ética Aplicada à Proteção Social (Ethics Applied to Social Protection, 2018), Raízes de Vida (Roots of Life, 2019).

Daniel de Matos

Degree in Medicine (1973) and Internal Medicine specialist (HCL and OM) since 1981. Called to duty by the President of the Republic, to the then HCL, from 1986 to 1996. Medical Support Service Coordinator to the Presidency of the Republic, 1996 to present. Chief-Physician of CGD Social Services beginning in 1983. Ended functions there as Clinical Director in 2017. Non-executive administrator at HPP Saúde, May 2009 - December 2010. President of the Ethics Commission on Health for Hospital Lusíadas Lisboa, 2013-2016. Honored by the Portuguese army for medical activity with the following insignias: Grand Official of the Order of Christ’s Military, Grand Official of the Order of Merit, and Great Cross of the Order of Merit.

Eurico Castro Alves

Doctor, General Surgery specialist. Member of the Portuguese Society of Surgery and founding and former member of the Directorship of the Portuguese Society of Outpatient Surgery. Published and coordinated a variety of work in the area of General Surgery, regulation, quality, and health policy. Was member of the Directive Council of the Health Regulatory Entity, from 2005 to August of 2012. Presided over the Infarmed Directive Council from 2012 to 2015. In 2015, led the State Health Department of the XX Constitutional Government. Organizer and speaker for various scientific conferences and meetings in the areas of medicine, general surgery, regulation, and health policy. Currently is senior advisor for medical and regulatory matters for a variety of health companies and is Honorary Consul of the Republic of Guatemala in Portugal.

Jorge Soares

Holding a degree in medicine, Soares taught Anatomic Pathology at the Lisbon School of Medicine (2004-2012) and at the College of Medical Sciences (1996-2004). Acted as Director of Morphological Pathology at the Portuguese Oncology Institute and at the National Legal Medicine Institute (Lisbon delegation). Was president of the FCT Life and Health Sciences Scientific Council, of the A3ES Aviation Commission Schools of Medicine, and of the Ministry of Health’s National Commission for Centers of Reference. Acted as president of the Medical Sciences Society and of the Portuguese Societies of Anatomic Pathology and of Mastology He is a member of the academy (Portuguese National Academy of Medicine) and Corresponding Member (Spanish National Royal Academy of Medicine, Granada Royal Academy of Medicine, and Lisbon Academy of Sciences). Was director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Health and Human Development Service, Innovation in Health Program, Knowledge Program). Is president of the National Ethics Council for the Life Sciences.

Manuel Augusto Lopes de Lemos

Lawyer, president of the Misericórdias Saúde Group since its founding and is vice president of the Portuguese Confederation of Social Economics. President of the General Council at Hospital S. João, representative for Portugal on the Poverty 3 Consultive Council, and vice president of the United Nations Poverty Alleviation Committee. Representative for Portugal on the European Union Social Affairs Committee and designated expert by the Regions Committee for Assessment of the Socrates Program (European Union). President of the Interdisciplinary Commission Natality at CES. Honored with the insignia of Grand Official of the Order of Infante D. Henrique, as Knight of the Order of the Sovern Military of Malta and with the Gold Medal of Social Security.

Margarida Couto

Founding partner of the Vieira de Almeida & Associados (VdA) Lawyers Society, currently Senior Partner at Grupo IP & Digital, and also partner leading the Social Economics area. Frequently speaks at conferences related her areas of practice and has written authored many expert articles. Head of the VdA Sustainability Program and presides over the firm’s Pro Bono Committee. Is president of the VdA, the firm’s corporate academy, and CEO of the Vasco Vieira de Almeida Foundation. Is president of GRACE – Group for Reflection and Support of the Corporate Citizen, representing VdA.

Maria do Carmo Fonseca

Professor at the Lisbon School of Medicine. Degree in Medicine (1983) and PhD in Cellular Biology (1988), and president of the João Lobo Antunes Molecular Medicine Institute (iMM), and of the GenoMed Scientific Council. Is an elected member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) and the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, and a member of the editorial board of the journals Journal of Cell Science and RNA. In 2001, was appointed Commander of the Military Order of Sant'Iago da Espada. Distinguished with the Pfizer Research Award | Lisbon Society of Medical Sciences (1981, 1989), José Sala-Trepat Award | Fondation de France (2002), DuPont Science Iberian Award (2002), the Gulbenkian Science Award (2007), the Pessoa Award (2010), the Femina Award for Merit in Science (2011), the Dona Antónia Ferreira Award for women entrepreneurs (2013), and the Aboim Sande Lemos Award | Portuguese Identity (2018). Was also distinguished with the Ministry of Health Gold Medal (2012) and with the Centennial Award (2013).

Maria Eduarda Duarte

Professor at University of Lisbon, School of Psychology, where she coordinates the master’s Program in the Psychology of Human Resources, Work and Organizations. Was invited and visiting professor at Institutions in Europe, Asia, South America, Africa, and North America. Her professional interests include theory, investment, and intervention in the field of career psychology, with special focus on adults and the workplace. Her publications and presentations broach topics related to adults and the workplace, assessment, and counseling processes. Was president of the Portuguese Society of Psychology (2005-2018), is a member of editorial boards of scientific journals in Portugal, in Europe and also for American and Ibero-American magazines. Was director of the Institute of Professional Guidance (2009-2014). Is a member of the General Council at the University of Lisbon (2013-2014), and of the other management bodies of the University and College. Was president of the Counseling Division (2014-2018) at the International Association of Applied Psychology (IAAP). Is president of UNESCO CHAIR - Lifelong Guidance and Counseling, University of Wroclaw (Poland). Received the Fellow Award – IAAP (2014), and the European Society for Vocational Design and Counseling (ESVDC) Award (2015). Has been a National Defense auditor since 2007.
